Preventative Network Maintenance for South African Businesses: The Case for Checking Before It Breaks

Reactive IT support costs more than preventative maintenance. There are two ways to find out your network cabling has a problem. The first is during a maintenance inspection. The second is during a production failure.

Properly installed Cat6 cabling has a manufacturer-rated service life of 15 to 25 years. The connectors and patch points at each end of the run are the primary failure points, and they can be identified, cleaned and replaced during a scheduled maintenance visit before they cause a fault.

There are two ways to find out that your network cabling has a problem. The first is during a maintenance inspection. The second is during a production failure, a board meeting or an exam period.

The second is significantly more expensive.

Preventative maintenance is an established practice for physical infrastructure: vehicles, HVAC systems, electrical installations. Its application to IT cabling and network infrastructure is less universal, particularly in South African small business and industrial environments, where the prevailing model is reactive: wait for a fault, then investigate.

The reactive model has a cost structure that is often worse than preventative maintenance once the full picture is understood.

What deteriorates in a network over time

Structured cabling is durable. Properly installed Cat6 cable, run within specified bend radii and protected from physical stress, will perform within specification for fifteen to twenty-five years without intervention. The cable itself is the most resilient component of the system.

The components that deteriorate are at the endpoints. RJ45 patch cables, the shorter cables that connect workstations to wall outlets and patch panels to switches, experience physical stress every time they are plugged in, pulled out or moved. The locking tab breaks. The conductors at the plug end fatigue. In environments with high humidity, the contacts corrode. In environments with dust, the contacts accumulate debris that increases resistance.

Patch panel ports accumulate dust, oxidise and suffer physical damage from cables being inserted at awkward angles. A port that is partially failed introduces intermittent connectivity problems that are among the most difficult to diagnose remotely, because the fault appears and disappears depending on temperature, humidity and the angle at which the cable sits.

In South African conditions specifically, there are additional factors that accelerate wear. Load-shedding creates power instability that stresses active network equipment: switches, routers and access points, beyond what their power supplies were designed for if UPS protection is inadequate or not in place. Surge events during power restoration are a documented cause of premature switch failure in South African offices.

What a preventative maintenance programme covers

A Sourceworx network maintenance visit, which we recommend on a quarterly or biannual schedule depending on the environment, covers four categories of work.

Visual inspection: every cable run checked for physical damage, every connector inspected for debris and physical wear, every access point confirmed to be properly mounted and showing correct status indicators, comms cabinet inspected for temperature, airflow and cable management condition.

Physical cleaning: patch panel ports and accessible connectors cleaned with contact cleaner and compressed air, comms cabinet cleaned and debris removed, ventilation checked and cleared.

Performance testing: spot-checks on cable runs in areas of reported slowness or intermittent faults, throughput measurements at representative workstations, access point signal coverage survey updated if the office layout has changed.

Documentation update: as-built drawing updated for any changes made since the previous visit, maintenance log updated with findings and actions taken, any at-risk components flagged with replacement recommendation and cost estimate.

The output is a one-page maintenance report delivered within 48 hours of the visit.

The specific case for mining and industrial environments

Preventative maintenance matters more in mining and industrial environments than in office settings, for three reasons.

The physical environment is more demanding. Heat, dust, vibration and humidity accelerate wear in cabling and network equipment at a rate that office conditions do not. A cable run in an industrial area may need inspection every six months rather than every twelve.

The cost of a connectivity failure is higher. A production reporting system that loses connectivity does not just slow down communication: it takes production data offline. In a mining context where shift reporting, SCADA monitoring and safety system communications all depend on the network, a connectivity failure has an immediate operational cost.

And the physical distance from IT support resources means that response time for reactive faults is longer. A cable fault that would take two hours to diagnose and resolve in a Johannesburg office may take twenty-four hours at a remote mine site.
